Yarnish Roads, Bridges, Highway, Splines and Intersection

Freeware For Trainz Railroad Simulator TS12, TANE, TMR17, TRS19 and TRS22
Reskinned originals by Maddy25 and streadway from CDE Trainz

This tutorial will explain some of the YARN, Yarnish and CDE Yarnish descriptions, or naming conventions, used in the naming of the assets.

YARN (Yet Another Road Network) was originally made by Madeline Usher, or Maddy25, and friends. As Trainz developed over the years, S Treadway, or streadway, helped create the Yarnish update to the series. This included fixing the 'jump' or 'hop' on the uneven surfaces from the YARN assets to the Yarnish assets. Since then there have been many others adding to the collection. One of our favorites is the 'jons' Yarnish series intersections that are available on the DLS.

The CDE Yarnish road, bridge and highway splines were modified to change the traffic density and the speeds at which the carz cars travel. Since they are all available on the DLS, they can be used in DLS and TCCP Routes with no issues to the end user.

You can use one of the CDE Grid Regions to make the traffic drive on the right or the left.

As Madeline Usher says, "A kazillion roads have already been created for Trainz but, nevertheless, none of them seem to meet everyone's needs. So I've created Yet Another Road Network -- a set of models mostly suited for modeling U.S. roads. These probably won't meet everyone's needs either, but hopefully some people will find them useful. :p". See the included naming-conventions.txt file in each asset for more information about the attributes encoded in the asset's name. Here is what is in the text;

YARN and Yarnish (Yet Another Road Network) Naming Conventions:

Each YARN road piece is named starting with "YARN" or "Yarnish", and followed by various parameters describing a ceratin attribute, usually denoting whether or not the attribute is present. If it is present, it's preceded by a "+"; if not, it's preceded by a "-". For example, a road with a sidewalk would have a name containing "+Si", without a sidewalk would be "-Si".

  • Si = sidewalk
  • Sh = shoulder
  • Li = lights (this applies only to road/rail crossings)
  • P = piers (applies only to bridge-like objects)

The Lanes attribute is different in that it's used to give the total number of lanes:

  • L<digit> = number of lanes (e.g. L2 = two lanes)

The attribute describing the lines painted between lanes of oncoming traffic is also unusual because it has three possible values. DL stands for "Dividing Lines", and this is followed by a number meaning the following:

  • DL0 = unmarked, no dividing line at all
  • DL1 = single dashed line, passing allowed
  • DL1.5 = solid dashed, passing one side only
  • DL2 = double solid lines, no passing
  • DL3 = barrier

The CDE Yarnish roads and highways use this naming convention at the end ot the asset's descripton;

Traffic Denisity

Traffic density is determined on the road spline with a tag named 'carrate' in the config.txt file of the asset. Defined traffic density on road (minimum seconds between each car generated). 0 = No traffic. Number must be greater than 3. Numbers 1, 2 and 3 are reserved. The game waits between 1 and 3 times this value (in seconds) between generating traffic on the spline. So a value of 10 will cause 1 to 3 cars being spawned every 10 seconds.

  • TL - Traffic Density Low = 20
  • TM - Traffic Density Medium = 10
  • TH - Traffic Density High = 4
  • TN - Traffic Density NONE = 0

Traffic Speed

Traffic speed is determined on the road spline with a tag named 'traffic-speed' in the config.txt file of the asset. Defines the cars speed limit of the road in meters per second. Cars currently travel at up to 80%-110% (depending on the car) of the speed limit, except when overtaking.

  • SL - Speed Low 22 mph, 35 kph = 10
  • SM - Speed Medium 45 mph, 72 kph = 20
  • SH - Speed High 67 mph, 108 kph = 30

Here is a list of CDE Yarnish roads and intersections with traffic control. Note that intersections inherit the density and speed from the road attached to it.
